Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs to Face Court After Being Charged with Three Felonies
Warning: This article discusses sensitive topics such as sexual assault and domestic abuse, which some readers may find distressing.
The high-profile trial of music mogul Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs begins today, 5 May, in New York, where the Grammy-winning artist faces serious charges that could result in a lengthy prison sentence.
Nearly eight months after his arrest, Combs, the renowned record producer, is set to finally face trial. He has been held without bail at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn throughout this period. Recently, Combs rejected a last-minute plea deal, a move that could have shortened his legal battle. When Judge Arun Subramanian asked if he was turning down the offer from prosecutors, Combs responded with a resolute, “Yes, I do, your honor. Thank you.”
His defense attorney continues to maintain his innocence, preparing for a trial that is expected to last between eight to ten weeks.
Diddy’s Arrest and Indictment: A Dark Turn for the Music Mogul
On September 16, 2024, Sean “Diddy” Combs was arrested in a Manhattan hotel room following an indictment by a grand jury. His legal team quickly made a statement, asserting that the Bad Boy Records co-founder had voluntarily relocated to New York in anticipation of the charges, declaring, “These are the actions of an innocent man with nothing to hide,” while expressing his eagerness to clear his name in court.
Over the years, Combs has faced several lawsuits accusing him of various incidents and felonies spanning a 25-year period, culminating in these latest charges.
What Has Diddy Been Charged With?
The 55-year-old entertainment mogul now faces three severe charges outlined in a 14-page indictment from the Southern District of New York (SDNY):
- Racketeering conspiracy
- Sex trafficking by force, fraud, or coercion
- Transportation to engage in prostitution
These charges are part of a broader investigation involving sex trafficking, drug possession, and firearms offenses. Racketeering and sex trafficking carry the potential for life imprisonment.
The indictment alleges that since 2008, Combs used manipulation, threats, and coercion to control women and others around him, using his power to fulfill his sexual desires, safeguard his reputation, and cover up his actions. The document further claims that Combs leveraged his position within the music industry to build a “criminal enterprise” that included forced labor and even arson.
Authorities conducting raids on his properties in Miami and Los Angeles reportedly seized approximately 1,000 bottles of baby oil and lubricant, which they claim were linked to Combs’ alleged “freak-off” parties.
The day after his arrest, Combs pleaded not guilty to all charges and was denied bail. His lawyer, Marc Agnifilo, emphasized his client’s resolve, saying, “Mr. Combs is a fighter. He’s going to fight this to the end. He’s innocent.”

Diddy’s Response to the Charges: A Firm Denial of Allegations
Following his arrest, Sean “Diddy” Combs has strongly denied the charges against him. In a statement to LADbible, his legal team made it clear that Combs is unable to address every accusation amid what they described as a “sensationalized media spectacle.” They went on to say, “Mr. Combs vehemently denies any claims of sexual abuse, including allegations involving minors. These accusations are false and defamatory. He is eager to prove his innocence in court, where the truth will be revealed through evidence, not conjecture.”
This response came shortly after Houston-based attorney Tony Buzbee hinted that additional lawsuits representing around 120 alleged victims would soon be filed against Combs.
In addition to being denied bail, which was set at $50 million (£37.8 million), Combs’ defense team maintains that he is committed to fighting these charges in court.
Other Accusations Against Diddy
Following Combs’ arrest, several disturbing allegations have surfaced, including accusations of rape and sexual assault. Reports suggest that Combs’ alleged criminal activities were hidden under the guise of his music empire, with claims that he established a criminal network to carry out his actions.
A significant accusation came from his former partner, singer Cassandra Ventura, better known as Cassie. In 2023, she accused Combs of rape, as well as enduring physical and emotional abuse over a decade-long relationship. Although the case was settled the day after it was filed, CCTV footage later emerged showing Diddy dragging Cassie by her hair in a hotel in California. Despite attempts by Combs’ legal team to have the footage excluded from the trial, the court ruled it admissible, making it a key piece of evidence in the case.

How Long Could Diddy Spend in Prison?
If Sean “Diddy” Combs is found guilty of the three felony charges, he could face life in prison.
The charge of racketeering conspiracy, which involves illegal activities disguised as legitimate business, carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.
Similarly, sex trafficking by force, fraud, or coercion also carries a life sentence, with a mandatory minimum of 15 years in prison.
The third charge, transportation for the purpose of prostitution, has a maximum sentence of 10 years, but with multiple charges stacked against him, Combs could potentially face multiple life sentences.
Will Diddy’s Trial Be Televised?
No, Diddy’s trial will not be televised. As the music mogul faces federal criminal charges, a law established in 1946 prohibits the presence of ‘electronic media’ in the courtroom.
Under Federal Rule of Criminal Procedure 53, broadcasting or photographing a federal criminal trial is not allowed. However, in federal civil trials, media coverage is more flexible and determined at the discretion of the judge.
Today, a jury of 12 will be selected, with the opening statements scheduled for May 12.
