A Joyful Birth Takes a Shocking Turn for One Denver Mom
Reazjhana Williams walked into a Denver hospital in early June 2021, glowing with excitement and ready to welcome her baby girl through a natural birth. But what began as a day of joyful anticipation quickly spiraled into a whirlwind of fear, urgency—and heartbreak.
Everything changed when doctors couldn’t detect her baby’s heartbeat. Within moments, Reazjhana’s carefully laid birth plan was abandoned. “They gave me a pill to speed up my labor,” she told KDVR, “and just a few minutes later, I was being rushed into an emergency C-section.”
Before she could fully grasp what was happening, her daughter, Kyanni, was born. But the moment that should’ve been filled with tears of joy became one of disbelief and fear.
As Reazjhana caught her first glimpse of her newborn, her heart sank—Kyanni had a deep, severe cut stretching across her tiny face.
While most mothers get to cradle their baby on their chest, basking in those precious first moments, Reazjhana’s introduction to motherhood was dramatically different. Instead of bonding with her newborn, she had to watch helplessly as little Kyanni was whisked away—not to the nursery, but straight to a plastic surgeon.
The emotional toll was immense. “As a new parent, there are already so many emotions,” she said. “Seeing that scar made everything so much harder.”
What was supposed to be the happiest day of her life turned into a haunting memory she’s still trying to come to terms with.
A Mother’s Nightmare: Baby Kyanni Rushed to Plastic Surgery Moments After Birth
After her sudden C-section, Reazjhana Williams barely had a chance to see her newborn before she was taken away. Baby Kyanni had suffered a deep gash across her cheek, so severe that she was rushed directly to a plastic surgeon just minutes after entering the world.
“I tried to be understanding about what happened,” Reazjhana shared. “But on top of the fact her face got cut and a plastic surgeon had to come do it, there’s just a lot I’m not understanding with the C-section.”
The baby’s grandmother later learned from the medical team that Kyanni’s head had been positioned extremely close to the placenta wall, complicating the procedure. The doctors themselves were reportedly horrified by the injury, acting quickly to have the wound repaired.
Thirteen Stitches on Her First Day of Life
Little Kyanni’s facial laceration was so wide and deep that it required 13 stitches—an unimaginable reality for new parents already reeling from an emergency delivery.
“I’ve never heard of anybody having to deal with their baby’s face looking like this after a C-section,” said Damarqus, Kyanni’s father. “It’s upsetting. She’s not comfortable.”
In response, Denver Health issued a statement acknowledging the incident, saying:
“Denver Health has been in contact with the family directly. While this is a known medical complication in emergency C-sections, our focus is always on providing care in the best interest of the mother and child.”
“At Denver Health, the safety and well-being of our patients is our number one priority.”
Still, for the Williams family, the emotional and financial burden has been heavy. A GoFundMe campaign launched to help cover medical expenses has raised over $11,000—offering support from strangers touched by their story.
