FBI’s Dan Bongino Forced To Get Full-Time Security

The FBI has assembled a round-the-clock, multi-agency security detail to protect Deputy Director Dan Bongino—an unprecedented move for someone in his position. According to reports, the detail could involve as many as 20 agents and will rotate teams through temporary duty assignments to maintain coverage, even within FBI headquarters.

Bongino, a former Secret Service agent and NYPD officer, has the ability to carry a firearm but reportedly prefers to rely on his protective detail instead. His security arrangement stands in stark contrast to that of former Deputy Director Paul Abbate, who only had a single part-time agent accompany him to select engagements, primarily overseas trips.

The decision has raised eyebrows. “The question is, what is the actual risk and threat here, or does he just want a detail? This is taxpayer money we’re talking about,” former senior FBI official Frank Figliuzzi told NBC News. Full protective details are typically reserved for the FBI director and U.S. attorney general.

FBI Director Kash Patel and Bongino have both pledged sweeping reforms, insisting the bureau is in need of deep change. On Sunday night, Bongino addressed the matter on X, formerly Twitter, signaling his determination to push forward despite mounting scrutiny.

“Headed back to DC today after spending a day back home with my wife and daughter. As I dive back into work, I want to reassure you that nothing that is happening here is happening by accident. Because of the sensitivity of what the FBI deals with, both the Director and I have to be circumspect in what we can make public. Bad guys read this stuff too. Neither one of us came here to play games,” he wrote.

He added, “Measure us by results. You will see them. But just because you don’t see something happening right this second, doesn’t mean it isn’t happening… Complex problems require diligence and a reform-oriented process to create lasting changes. Or else you’re simply putting a bandage on a gushing wound. Let’s do it right. God bless America, and all those who defend Her.”

Bongino followed up with a second post, doubling down on his message that reform will take time, but change is coming.
