A terrible car accident that occurred close to the border between Wyoming and Colorado claimed the lives of three young divers and swimmers who were members of the University of Wyoming swimming and diving team.

Two young lives were tragically lost in a devastating accident on Red Mountain Road and U.S. Highway 287, nestled between Livermore and Virginia Dale, Colorado. The victims were 19-year-old from Las Vegas and 21-year-old Luke Slabber, a junior from Cape Town, South Africa.

Early reports suggest that the driver’s erratic actions led to the vehicle veering off the road, tumbling multiple times in a harrowing crash.

On Friday, the Colorado State Patrol issued a statement revealing that no potential causes, including speed, impairment, or distractions, have been ruled out as contributing factors. Authorities confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, as they work to uncover the circumstances behind this heartbreaking incident.

In this heartbreaking incident, two additional members of the men’s swimming and diving team sustained injuries, though fortunately, none were life-threatening. They have since been released from the hospital. Remarkably, one of the survivors was behind the wheel when the crash occurred just before 2:45 p.m.

The Colorado State Patrol, which continues to investigate the incident, reported that the vehicle—a Toyota RAV4 carrying five people—veered out of the southbound lane and rolled multiple times, ejecting two individuals in the process. The investigation into the cause of the crash is still underway.

It is important to emphasize that, despite the tragic loss of life involving members of the university’s swimming team, they were not on official university business at the time of the accident.

In the wake of this devastating tragedy, Ed Seidel, President of the University of Wyoming, expressed profound sorrow, acknowledging that no words can fully capture the immense grief felt by the university, the state, and the broader student-athlete community.

Tom Burman, Director of Athletics at the University of Wyoming, extended his deepest sympathies, reflecting on the unimaginable pain of losing members of the University of Wyoming family. Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon, along with his wife, also shared their heartfelt condolences, recognizing the profound loss that has left the community in mourning.
