“He Was Dead on the Pole… Until His Friend Did the Unthinkable”

I have to share one of the most unforgettable and inspiring images of courage and compassion ever captured. This iconic photograph immortalizes the life-saving rescue of a lineman whose heart had suddenly stopped after touching a low-voltage wire.

When the accident happened, his coworker didn’t hesitate. Racing to the utility pole, he found his colleague dangling helplessly. With no room to perform traditional CPR, he held him steady and breathed life back into his lungs—literally giving him a second chance. Feeling a faint pulse, he lifted the injured man onto his shoulders and carried him safely to the ground. Alongside another coworker, they continued CPR until emergency rescuers arrived. Thanks to their bravery, the lineman survived and made a full recovery.

The photograph, captured by Jacksonville Journal photographer Rocco Morabito, would go on to win the Pulitzer Prize in 1968, famously titled “The Kiss of Life.” It’s more than a picture—it’s a testament to human heroism, quick thinking, and the extraordinary power of compassion.
