It’s the age-old kitchen debate: where should you store your butter?

Some swear by the countertop method—soft, spreadable butter always ready for toast. Others won’t risk it, keeping it safely chilled in the fridge. So who’s right?

Thanks to its high fat and low water content, butter is less likely to harbor harmful bacteria. But that doesn’t mean it’s invincible. In warm or humid kitchens, butter left out too long can turn rancid or even develop mold.

Refrigerating butter keeps it fresh longer and prevents spoilage, but it does come with a trade-off: rock-hard butter that’s tough to spread.

Ultimately, it’s a balance between convenience and caution. If your kitchen stays cool, leaving butter out for a few days is generally safe. For longer storage or warmer environments, the fridge is your best bet.
