Rocco’s Little Chicago, a beloved local eatery famed for its deep-dish pizza, saucy wings, and cheeky signage, is no stranger to attention. But this time, it’s their bold marquee that has ignited controversy:
“All law enforcement officials do not enter without a lawful search warrant.”
After the sign gained traction on social media, backlash followed swiftly. Some users are now calling for a boycott, accusing the restaurant of being anti-police. But owner Rocco DiGrazia says the message is being wildly misinterpreted.
“It’s nothing personal,” DiGrazia told 13 News. “We had seven officers here in uniform eating today, and I expect it’ll be the same tomorrow.”
Far from anti-police, DiGrazia has deep personal ties to law enforcement—his father served 33 years with the Chicago Police Department. He recalls childhood memories of tagging along on long drives just to find a good sandwich:
“COPS KNOW WHERE TO EAT,” he said with a smile. “When I see folks in uniform out on the floor, I know we’re doing something right.”
So why the pointed message? According to DiGrazia, it’s a response to an uptick in unofficial visits from law enforcement. The sign isn’t about banning police officers—it’s about protecting customer rights and ensuring any law enforcement activity is conducted appropriately.
“If someone shows up with a signed warrant and is here on official business, they’re absolutely welcome,” he clarified. The message echoes similar signage distributed by local advocacy groups amid concerns about increasing immigration enforcement.
Online Backlash—and Loyalty
Despite the owner’s explanation, the internet had plenty to say. Critics blasted the sign as disrespectful.
“I will not support a business that doesn’t support our law enforcement,” one commenter posted. “You should be ashamed. #BoycottRoccos.” Another declared, “I won’t go somewhere that law enforcement is not welcome!”
DiGrazia remains unfazed.
“This is low-hanging fruit,” he shrugged. “It’s the social media world we live in.”
He’s confident the dust will settle—and that the food will speak for itself.
“My side is tasty food,” he added with a grin.
And despite the firestorm, he says law enforcement has continued to dine there as usual.
“The sign has been up for two months. I haven’t seen a dip in uniformed officers coming in. They get it.”
