Unseen video footage has captured the emotional reaction of the Cardinals as Robert Prevost was named the new pope, marking a historic moment for the Catholic Church.
In a heartwarming scene shared by Vatican News, Cardinal Prevost—now Pope Leo XIV—was greeted with warm embraces and congratulations from his fellow Cardinals after being elected leader of the Church following the passing of Pope Francis.
The 69-year-old Pope is seen exiting the Sistine Chapel, pausing to kneel in a moment of personal prayer at a prie-dieu, offering a poignant glimpse into his humility and devotion.
Hailing from Chicago, Pope Leo XIV makes history as the first American to take on the monumental responsibility of leading the Catholic Church. Prior to his papacy, he served as the Bishop of Chiclayo in Peru from 2015 to 2023, and as the General of the Order of Saint Augustine from 2001 to 2013.
The video has rapidly gone viral on social media, captivating viewers with an intimate look at the papal proceedings and the new pope’s heartfelt interactions. One Twitter user remarked, “A powerful display of unity and humility—may Pope Leo XIV’s embrace of his fellow Cardinals inspire his pontificate, guiding him in service and brotherhood.”
The touching moments continued to pour in from social media, with one user noting: “A powerful moment of fraternity and grace within the Sistine Chapel. Pope Leo XIV begins his papacy not with fanfare, but with an embrace—echoing Christ, who came to serve, not to be served.”
Another shared: “A moment of profound unity and humility. May Pope Leo XIV’s papacy be marked by the same grace and fellowship shown in this first act of embrace.”
One Catholic viewer expressed their joy, saying: “For me as a Catholic, even if I’m not at church every Sunday, today I’m really happy to see our Pope. I have good feelings about him. The world and the USA need new hope and a teacher who will unite us all.”
When Pope Leo XIV took to the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica to deliver his first address, he called for global unity and love. His first words as pope, “May peace be with all of you,” resonated deeply with those gathered.
Reflecting on the legacy of Pope Francis, he added: “The pope who blessed Rome also gave his blessing to the world on that Easter morning. Let us continue to build on that blessing.”
Pope Leo XIV went on to emphasize the importance of being a missionary Church: “Together, we must find how to be a church that builds bridges, that establishes dialogue.”
He also expressed his gratitude toward the Cardinals, saying: “Thank you to my Cardinal brothers who have chosen me to be the successor of Peter. Together, we will walk as a united Church, seeking peace and justice, working as women and men faithful to Jesus Christ without fear, proclaiming Christ and remaining true to the gospel.”
