Analyst fired after comments on live TV about Charlie Kirk’s death

MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN – JULY 15, 2024: Charlie Kirk, CEO of Turning Point USA, took the stage at the Fiserv Forum on the opening day of the Republican National Convention. Delegates, politicians, and party faithful had gathered in Milwaukee for the annual event, which culminated in former President Donald Trump accepting the Republican presidential nomination. The RNC ran from July 15–18.

In the wake of Kirk’s tragic death, some media outlets faced sharp criticism over their coverage. TMZ, for instance, issued an apology after staff members were heard laughing in the background of a live report—a reaction reportedly triggered by an unrelated video. Meanwhile, a political analyst on MSNBC lost his job following comments made during live coverage.

Matthew Dowd, asked to comment on “the environment in which a shooting like this happens,” referenced Kirk’s past remarks. He stated:

“He’s been one of the most divisive younger figures, constantly pushing rhetoric aimed at certain groups. Hateful thoughts lead to hateful words, which then lead to hateful actions. You can’t say awful things and expect awful actions not to follow—that’s the unfortunate environment we’re in.”

OREM, UTAH – SEPTEMBER 10, 2025: Kirk, speaking at Utah Valley University as part of his American Comeback Tour, was shot in the neck and killed during the event.

Dowd’s remarks quickly drew backlash. MSNBC President Rebecca Kutler released a statement:

“During our breaking news coverage of the shooting of Charlie Kirk, Matthew Dowd made comments that were inappropriate, insensitive, and unacceptable. We apologize for his statements, as has he. There is no place for violence in America, political or otherwise.”

Dowd later addressed the controversy on Bluesky, writing:

“I apologize for my tone and words. Let me be clear—I in no way intended to blame Charlie Kirk for this horrendous attack. We must all come together to condemn violence of any kind.”
