Young Dad Passed Away Unexpectedly, Doctors Discover 72 Lung Holes

Dylan Jay Watts, a 28-year-old father from Broulee, a quiet coastal town on Australia’s New South Wales coast, was beloved by all who knew him. Known for his unwavering devotion to his young son, Dylan often spoke of the joy and purpose fatherhood had brought to his life. Upon his child’s birth, he shared a heartfelt reflection: “Words cannot describe how much more purpose I feel with you in my life!”

Tragically, Dylan’s promising journey was cut heartbreakingly short when he passed away on March 22, leaving behind a devastated family and community. Although he had been battling serious health issues for years, his sudden passing shocked those closest to him. Family friend Cheyenne O’Brien recalled the sense of disbelief that followed: “Although Dylan had been gravely ill in the weeks and days leading to his passing, his loved ones were still shocked by his death.”

Dylan’s health struggles began intensifying in 2021, when scans revealed two holes in his lungs. At the time, the diagnosis was alarming but not immediately life-threatening. Yet over the next few years, his condition deteriorated rapidly. By mid-2024, the number of holes had surged to 72, caused by a severe and persistent bacterial infection that ravaged his respiratory system—a progression that baffled both doctors and family alike.

His sister, Caitlyn Watts, shared the harrowing details with Daily Mail Australia: “I found out in July of last year how severe things had begun to get. He had holes in his lungs and had been hospitalized for three weeks after coughing up blood.” She added that his doctor had warned the outcome could have been fatal if he hadn’t sought medical attention promptly. Despite aggressive treatments, Dylan’s health continued to decline.

Throughout his ordeal, Dylan endured relentless symptoms: chronic coughing fits, severe acid reflux, extreme fatigue, and immense mental strain. Over-the-counter remedies offered little relief, and specialized medical care became a necessity. In early 2024, a lung hemorrhage led to a three-week hospital stay. Caitlyn recalled, “By this point, my brother was on so many medications and antibiotics that they filled an entire backpack.”

Despite the severity of his illness, Dylan’s spirit remained unbroken. “He was severely unwell yet fighting for his health and optimistic about some kind of recovery,” Caitlyn said. Doctors, however, delivered a sobering prognosis: the advanced infection and lung damage meant he likely wouldn’t live past 30. Yet Dylan and his family clung to hope.

In his final days, Dylan returned home to be surrounded by love. His mother, Suzanne, brought him home along with his beloved puppy, Polar, and arranged for long-term care. Tragically, he passed just five days later—mere days before his 29th birthday—leaving a void in the hearts of all who loved him.

In response to this heartbreaking loss, Dylan’s family launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover funeral costs, setting a goal of AU$6,000. The campaign quickly raised over AU$4,600, reflecting the outpouring of love and support from the community. Caitlyn shared a poignant message on the fundraiser page: “Let this be a reminder that those you love can be gone in an instant. Hold them close today and tell them you love them. There is a fragility in all of us. Dylan will be forever missed.”

Cheyenne O’Brien also spoke to the profound sorrow surrounding Dylan’s passing, emphasizing both the grief and the challenge of planning his farewell. “Although Dylan had been unwell, this has, of course, come as a shock to his loved ones, who are now dealing not only with grief but with the stress of arranging his farewell,” she said. She encouraged the public to support the family, urging donations and shares to help give Dylan the send-off he deserved.

Dylan’s story is a powerful reminder of life’s fragility and the enduring impact of love. Though his time was heartbreakingly brief, his devotion as a father, brother, and friend leaves a lasting legacy—a testament to the profound ways one life can touch countless others.
