Woody Harrelson gives update on doing DNA test with Matthew McConaughey to see if they’re brothers

Rumors have been swirling over the past couple of years that the two Hollywood stars could be related

Could Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson be more than just friends?

These two Hollywood stars may have first shared the screen on True Detective in 2014, but their bond goes way beyond the hit TV series. In fact, their friendship dates all the way back to 1997 when they worked together on EDtv.

Now, the dynamic duo is teaming up once again, this time for their upcoming Apple TV+ show, Brothers — a title that feels especially fitting considering their remarkable history and unique connection.

In recent years, an intriguing theory has emerged suggesting that the two actors might actually be brothers in real life. The idea came to light during a conversation they had with McConaughey’s mom, Mary, that sparked plenty of speculation.

As McConaughey recalled during a 2023 appearance on Kelly Ripa’s Let’s Talk Off Camera podcast, “In Greece a few years ago, we’re sitting around talking about how close we are and our families. And my mom is there, and she says, ‘Woody, I knew your dad.’ Everyone caught the weight of the word ‘knew’—it was a loaded K-N-E-W.”

To make things even more interesting, both actors share Texan roots, were born in the 1960s, and have strikingly similar physical features, leading fans to wonder if there might be some truth to the possibility of them being brothers after all.

After McConaughey’s mom’s remark, both he and Harrelson began to piece together the possibility that convicted hitman Charles Harrelson could potentially be McConaughey’s biological father. The idea quickly gained traction, with many fans urging the duo to undergo a DNA test to find out for sure. Even veteran talk show host Maury Povich invited the A-list pair to take the test live on his show.

During an appearance on British station Radio X, host Johnny Vaughan asked Harrelson about the idea, saying, “Woody, I know you’re doing this thing Brothers with Matthew McConaughey. Did you investigate whether the two of you might actually be brothers or related?” Harrelson responded, “Well, we haven’t done the DNA test, but we’re probably going to do that. I think there’s a real possibility.”

Vaughan jokingly attributed it to “promiscuous parents,” and Harrelson responded with a laugh, adding, “Yeah, it sounds like something went on. And the thing was Matthew’s mom and dad divorced. They were married three times.”

Although the possibility of taking the DNA test seems high, Harrelson didn’t give a specific timeline on when it might happen—leaving fans to continue eagerly speculating about the true nature of their bond.
