Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has addressed the reports, and she’s not impressed
The White House has responded to claims that the Trump administration is revoking 240,000 Ukrainian people’s temporary legal status in the US.
Trump Reportedly Plans to Revoke Ukrainian Refugee Status Amid Military Aid Freeze
Earlier today (March 6), reports surfaced that Donald Trump intends to revoke the protected status of Ukrainian refugees in the U.S., following his controversial decision to halt all military aid to the war-torn nation.
The move to suspend military assistance comes on the heels of tense discussions between President Trump and President Zelenskyy in late February, where the two leaders struggled to find common ground on ending the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia.
“The president has been clear that he is focused on peace. We need our partners to be committed to that goal as well,” a White House official stated on March 3. Addressing the decision to pause and reassess U.S. aid, the spokesperson added: “We are reviewing our support to ensure that it contributes to a resolution.”
As concerns mounted over what appeared to be another significant blow to Ukraine, reports claimed that Trump planned to strip temporary legal protections from Ukrainians who fled to the U.S. after Russia’s invasion in February 2022.
However, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt swiftly pushed back against these claims, denying that any final decision had been made.
Sharing a screenshot of an article discussing the allegations, Leavitt took to social media, tweeting: “This is more fake news from Reuters based on anonymous sources who have no idea what they are talking about. The truth: no decision has been made at this time.”
While the situation remains uncertain, the mere possibility of these actions has already sparked intense debate and concern among policymakers, refugees, and international allies.
Zelenskyy Pressured to Mend Ties with Trump After Chaotic White House Meeting
Following a tumultuous meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and U.S. President Donald Trump, international leaders are now urging Zelenskyy to rebuild his relationship with Trump to secure continued support from the United States.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte revealed a conversation he had with the Ukrainian leader, emphasizing the importance of restoring ties with the U.S. administration.
“What I told President Zelenskyy is that I said, ‘I think you have to find a way, dear Volodymyr, to restore your relationship with Donald Trump and the American administration. That is important going forward,'” Rutte stated.
Britain’s ambassador to the U.S., Lord Mandelson, echoed this sentiment, warning that immediate steps must be taken to bring Washington and Kyiv back together.
“After what happened on Friday, it’s clear that we need to bring the United States and Ukraine together again,” Mandelson told The Telegraph. “I think the first thing that President Zelenskyy can do is to make clear his commitment to the initiative that President Trump is taking.”
Mandelson further suggested that signing an economic and commercial deal proposed by the U.S. could be a key move for Ukraine to regain American support.
With U.S. military aid frozen and diplomatic tensions running high, pressure is mounting on Zelenskyy to navigate this delicate political landscape before Ukraine faces even greater challenges on the global stage.
