The world’s most beautiful dog has been revealed according to science

The top dog might come as a surprise to some…

I’m sure we all think our own dog is the most beautiful dog there has ever been, but experts worked out which is technically the most beautiful of them all (according to science).

When it comes to stunning dogs, most people might immediately think of breeds like the Golden Retriever or Poodle—but surprisingly, neither of these fan-favorites even made it into the top ten.

While beauty is undoubtedly subjective, there’s a fascinating concept called the ‘golden ratio’—a mathematical formula used to measure aesthetic perfection. This ratio has been used to identify some of the world’s most beautiful women, including Zendaya, Jodie Comer, Bella Hadid, and Ariana Grande, based on their facial proportions. So, could the same mathematical principle be applied to determine the most beautiful dog breeds? It’s a question that’s been recently explored!

When it comes to handsome men, the golden ratio has also been applied, with famous faces like Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Lucien Laviscount (from Emily In Paris), and Paul Mescal being hailed as some of the most handsome men based on this mathematical standard.

But it’s not just humans who’ve been put under the spotlight using this ratio—dog breeds have been evaluated too! In recent years, the team at money.co.uk took on the challenge of applying the golden ratio to some of the most popular dog breeds in the world, determining which pups come closest to perfection according to this fascinating formula.

When it comes to beauty in dog breeds, the golden ratio provides a fascinating way to measure their proportions, with the closer a breed’s features align with this ideal, the more “statistically beautiful” it is considered. Based on this formula, the top ten most beautiful dog breeds according to York Press are:

  1. Pembroke Welsh Corgi – 83.9%
  2. Norfolk Terrier – 84.3%
  3. Italian Greyhound – 84.9%
  4. Tolling Retriever – 85.0%
  5. Weimaraner – 85.6%
  6. Welsh Terrier – 85.9%
  7. Rhodesian Ridgeback – 86.0%
  8. Border Collie – 86.7%
  9. West Highland White Terrier – 87.5%
  10. Cairn Terrier – 88.7%

On the flip side, some breeds didn’t fare as well in the beauty stakes, with the Shih Tzu, Bulldog, and Rottweiler among the least beautiful, according to the golden ratio.

Salman Haqqi, a pet insurance expert at money.co.uk, shared his thoughts on the findings: “Of course, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and regardless of a dog’s breed ranking, every dog — no matter its shape or size — deserves appreciation.”

He added, “One of the most important ways to care for any dog is to ensure it is fully insured. This way, any unforeseen expenses can be easily handled, allowing both you and your pet to enjoy your time together without worry.”
