Russia issues statement as Trump threatens ‘devastating’ punishment if they don’t agree to new deal

Donald Trump said that the US could ‘could do bad things to Russia’ if it doesn’t sign the ceasefire

Russia has finally responded to the US and Ukraine holding peace talks earlier this week.

Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the two nations have been locked in a brutal conflict. As the war stretches into its third year, America is hoping to play a pivotal role in bringing it to an end.

In pursuit of this goal, US and Ukrainian officials met in Saudi Arabia for a marathon eight-hour negotiation aimed at brokering a ceasefire with Russia. During the talks, President Trump hinted at the severe consequences for Russia if they fail to cooperate, saying, “We could do things very bad for Russia. Would be devastating for Russia. But I don’t want to do that because I want to see peace.”

In addition to peace efforts, America reaffirmed its commitment to military and security assistance to Ukraine, signaling continued support. However, discussions on a raw minerals deal remain ongoing, with no final decisions yet made.

While Ukraine and the US have kept communication lines open, Russia has voiced frustration, claiming it has been left out of the critical conversations.

Following the high-stakes meeting, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov expressed frustration during an interview with pro-Kremlin US bloggers, as reported by The New York Post: “Nobody is talking to us. They keep saying, ‘nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine,’ but they do everything about Russia without Russia.”

Lavrov also made it clear that Russia would never sign any deal that could endanger the lives of the Russian people. In a bold stance, he reiterated that Russia would not allow NATO troops on Ukrainian soil, emphasizing that this was a non-negotiable condition.

While Ukraine has long sought to join NATO, Russia is determined to block those efforts, citing concerns over foreign military presence in the country. Reports from Reuters suggest that this demand remains a key obstacle in any potential peace deal between the warring nations.

Vladimir Putin is reportedly seeking international recognition of Russia’s claim on Crimea, a region that was once part of the Soviet Union but was annexed by Russia in 2014. These demands are believed to be part of a list Russia recently presented to the US, countering Lavrov’s claims that Russia has been excluded from discussions about the US and Ukraine’s plans.

This isn’t the first time Russia has made such demands. Similar requests were put forward during previous talks with the Biden administration in 2021 and 2022. However, these talks ended in failure, with Russia ultimately launching its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Given the history of stalled negotiations, Putin’s commitment to any potential ceasefire agreement remains highly uncertain, leaving the future of peace talks in limbo.
