Canada’s next Prime Minister Mark Carney vows to win trade war as he immediately hits out at Donald Trump
In his acceptance address, Mark Carney, who will succeed Donald Trump as Prime Minister of Canada, has been critical of the president.
Mark Carney, freshly nominated as Justin Trudeau’s successor on Sunday, March 9, wasted no time in stepping into the spotlight. The soon-to-be Prime Minister of Canada vowed to secure victory in the ongoing trade war with the United States and immediately launched a sharp critique of Donald Trump. His bold statement set the stage for a new chapter in Canada’s political landscape, signaling his readiness to confront the challenges ahead with determination and resolve.

Mark Carney, the former head of central banks in both the United Kingdom and Canada, emerged victorious in the race to lead the Liberal Party in Canada, making history as the first candidate without significant political experience to ascend to the position of Prime Minister. Carney is expected to formally take over the role in the coming days and will also lead the Liberal Party into the upcoming general election, which is anticipated to be called in the next few weeks, according to BBC News.
However, Carney didn’t waste any time before stepping into the spotlight, launching a fierce attack against U.S. President Donald Trump upon accepting the opportunity to lead Canada.
Trump, in a move that Carney described as “catastrophic,” signed an executive order imposing heavy tariffs on Canadian goods. The president’s aim is to hold Canada “accountable” for what he perceives as their failure to uphold promises regarding drug control, specifically the “flood of poisonous drugs” entering the U.S. This new measure includes an additional 10% tax on Canadian energy products, alongside the previously imposed 25% tariff on all imports from Canada.
In a bold statement, Trump, the 47th President of the United States, proposed that the only “solution” for Canada to avoid these tariffs would be for the country to become the 51st state of the U.S.

On Sunday, Mark Carney delivered a powerful speech declaring, “America is not Canada,” and emphasizing that Canada will never be part of the United States, “in any manner, shape, or form.”
He continued, “This fight is not one we sought, but Canadians are always ready to rise when the gloves are thrown down. Our resources, our water, our land, our country—all things America seeks to take.”
“Think about it,” Carney added. “If they succeed, they will destroy our way of life.” He then acknowledged the difficult path ahead, saying, “I know these are challenging times. We are emerging from the shock, but we must never forget the lessons we’ve learned: we must take care of ourselves, and we must look out for one another. In the tough days ahead, we must stand together.”
The speech came on the heels of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s emotional farewell address. Stepping down from his post, Trudeau reflected on the last decade, stating, “These past ten years have been difficult,” as reported by the New York Post. He acknowledged the constant crises faced by Canadians, but praised the resilience of the people, who have shown, through each and every trial, who they truly are today.

“We have come together, we have defended one another, and through every challenge, we have emerged stronger,” Trudeau continued. “And now, as Canadians face—what is, from our neighbor—an existential threat and an economic crisis, we are showing the world exactly what we’re made of.”
