The 26-year-old is currently incarcerated at the Metropolitan Detention Center, Brooklyn, without bond
Luigi Mangione’s daily routine at a Brooklyn detention facility consists of reading, eating ramen, and attending chess nights with his fellow incarcerated ‘brothers’, according to a new notice.
In a chilling turn of events, 26-year-old Mangione was charged with the shocking murder of Brian Thompson, the 50-year-old CEO of UnitedHealthcare, who was fatally shot outside a New York City hotel on December 4.
After a nationwide manhunt, authorities apprehended Mangione at a McDonald’s restaurant in Pennsylvania on December 10. Just a week later, the Manhattan District Attorney’s office indicted him on eleven state charges, including first-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon. On December 19, Mangione faced an additional four federal charges, including two counts of stalking, murder with a firearm, and a firearms offense. He has since pleaded not guilty.
Mangione is currently being held without bond at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center — the same facility where Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs is currently awaiting trial for racketeering and sex trafficking allegations.
MDC Brooklyn has housed several high-profile inmates over the years, including rapper 6ix9ine, Smallville actress Allison Mack, disgraced musician R. Kelly, and prominent luxury real estate agents Tal, Oren, and Alon Alexander.

The Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in Brooklyn, a federal administrative detention facility that opened in the 1990s, is known for its grim reputation. Housing approximately 1,174 detainees, the jail has been described by U.S. District Judge Gary Brown as a place of ‘chaos’ and ‘uncontrolled violence.’ Defense lawyer Xavier Donaldson even remarked that MDC has ‘a way of breaking people,’ according to NBC News.
Despite the bleak conditions, the facility does offer amenities like an outdoor recreation area, a medical unit with examination rooms and a dental suite, plus a separate wing dedicated to educational programs and the jail’s library, as reported by the Associated Press.
Since being transferred to MDC on December 19, Mangione — the 26-year-old accused of murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson — has reportedly shared a glimpse into his life behind bars. According to The Express Tribune, a social media user posted an image of a letter on Reddit that they claim is from Mangione himself.
In the letter, addressed to a woman named Genevieve, Mangione reflected on his time at MDC. Dated February 26, he described his holiday season as ‘fair’ and said he was ‘doing just fine’ while awaiting trial.
“My usual routine includes reading, eating lots of ramen, exercising, and spending time with my fellow brothers here,” Mangione allegedly wrote. “We have chess nights on Wednesday, and it’s a fun way to pass time together.”

Mangione’s letter reportedly continues with a heartfelt book recommendation — Self-Compassion: The Proven Power of Being Kind to Yourself by Kristin Neff — a title he described as a “great source of support for [him] during [his] freshman year of college.”
In the letter, Mangione empathized with the challenges of young adulthood, writing, “I understand the feeling of wanting to give up at times. Navigating young adulthood can be tough, but I believe we can all find our way through.”
He concluded his message with warm encouragement: “I wish you the best of luck with your graduation next semester. You have a bright future ahead.”
The letter, shared on Reddit, quickly sparked conversation, with hundreds of users debating its contents and reflecting on Mangione’s words.
One Reddit user remarked, “Wow. I’m surprised he is able to comfort people who write to him even in his circumstances. At least he seems to be enjoying his time with his inmates who he’s referring to as brothers lol.”
Mangione has been described as a ‘model prisoner’ by Karen Friedman Agnifilo, a veteran of New York City’s criminal justice system.
Another commenter speculated, “50 years from now they’re going to sell books of all these letters over the years. It’s wild what has evolved from what he did.”
