Hollywood actor Gene Hackman has died aged 95, along with wife Betsy Arakawa aged 63

Police have confirmed that Hollywood veteran actor Gene Hackman has been found dead in his Santa Fe home.

Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza has confirmed the heartbreaking news that legendary actor Gene Hackman and his wife, classical pianist Betsy Arakawa, were found dead in their New Mexico home. Their beloved dog was also discovered deceased alongside them.

While the cause of death remains unknown, Mendoza stated that there is currently no suspicion of foul play. When pressed by reporters on when the couple may have passed, he declined to provide details.

“All I can say is that we’re in the middle of a preliminary death investigation, waiting on approval of a search warrant,” Mendoza said in a statement.

Gene Hackman, a true Hollywood icon, left an indelible mark on the film industry with unforgettable performances, including his portrayal of Lex Luthor in Superman, the ruthless Little Bill Daggett in Unforgiven, and the relentless Jimmy Doyle in The French Connection.

Despite his larger-than-life presence on screen, Hackman was known for his intensely private nature. In 2004, he shocked the industry by announcing his retirement from acting, quietly stepping away from the spotlight and relocating from Los Angeles to New Mexico.

“I haven’t held a press conference to announce retirement, but yes, I’m not going to act any longer. I really don’t want to do it any longer,” he told the press at the time. His decision came after more than 100 acting roles, with speculation that stress played a role in his departure.

Hackman found lasting love with classical pianist Betsy Arakawa, whom he began dating in the mid-’80s before marrying in 1991. He firmly dismissed any rumors that their relationship led to the end of his first marriage to Faye Maltese. “By the way, I did not leave my real-life wife for a younger woman. We just drifted apart. We lost sight of each other. When you work in this business, marriage takes a great deal of work and love,” he explained.
