The findings come after Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa’s family feared the couple died of carbon monoxide poisoning
The gas company tasked with helping the investigation of Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa’s ‘suspicious’ deaths say they found a ‘minuscule leak’.
Tragic Discovery: Hollywood Legend Gene Hackman Found Unresponsive at Home
The legendary Gene Hackman, 95, was tragically discovered on the floor of his Santa Fe, New Mexico home on February 26, after what appears to be a distressing incident. His wife, Betty Jean, 65, and their 12-year-old dog were also found in a similar state, in a separate room.
Hackman’s daughter, Elizabeth Jean Hackman, expressed concern in an interview with TMZ, suggesting that the family members could have fallen victim to carbon monoxide poisoning or other potentially toxic fumes. However, initial tests conducted by the Santa Fe City Fire Department revealed no signs of a carbon monoxide leak or poisoning at the scene.
The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation, as fans and family alike hope for further clarity.

No Foul Play Suspected in Gene Hackman’s Mysterious Health Incident
The tragic discovery of Gene Hackman, 95, and his wife, Betty Jean, 65, has prompted further investigation by authorities. The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office stated that while foul play is not suspected, the circumstances surrounding their deaths are “suspicious enough” to warrant a comprehensive probe.
New Mexico Gas has also conducted an investigation into the couple’s home and confirmed there were no significant findings related to gas leaks or carbon monoxide poisoning. Gas workers did, however, find a small leak around a stove burner, releasing 0.33 percent gas into the air — but it was determined not to be a lethal amount. Additionally, inspectors flagged several other code violations, though they didn’t involve gas or carbon monoxide.
Authorities are still awaiting autopsy and toxicology results, but the Sheriff’s Office confirmed that carbon monoxide has now been ruled out as the cause of death, after tests on both Gene and Betsy’s bodies came back negative.

Gene Hackman’s Mysterious Death Raises Questions: No External Trauma Found
As investigations into Gene Hackman and his wife Betty Jean’s deaths continue, new details are emerging about the suspicious circumstances surrounding the discovery of their bodies. Authorities revealed that there were no signs of external trauma on either of them, though the pair appeared to have abruptly fallen to the ground, suggesting they may have died suddenly. It also appeared they had been deceased for some time before being discovered.
Interestingly, tests on Gene’s pacemaker revealed he was alive as recently as February 17, with a “last event” recorded just nine days before their bodies were found, which the authorities believe offers a reasonable assumption that Gene passed away around that time.
Further adding to the mystery, two maintenance workers discovered that the front door of their home was left unlocked, which they deemed unusual. Meanwhile, two of the couple’s three dogs were found healthy on the property, raising even more questions about the circumstances.
In the bathroom, near Betsy’s body, an open bottle of prescription pills was found scattered on the countertop, while Gene was discovered in the mud-room by his walking stick and sunglasses. These disconcerting details continue to fuel the ongoing investigation into their deaths.
