Cybertruck owner reveals how much it really costs to fully charge and people are horrified

David Nguyen took to Instagram to share a video of him charging up his Tesla Cybertruck

While the Cybertruck is seen on the roads far more often nowadays, there’s no doubt many of us remain extremely intrigued by the futuristic-looking vehicle.

Despite some negative buzz surrounding the Tesla-owned Cybertruck, including viral videos of it struggling in heavy snow while other vehicles effortlessly passed by, and an owner warning others about a terrifying crash while using its self-driving feature, there’s still plenty of curiosity surrounding this electric vehicle. While electric cars tend to have a higher upfront cost compared to traditional petrol and diesel vehicles, many are still considering investing in the future with the Cybertruck.

One key advantage of EVs is their typically lower running costs, but the Cybertruck may just be an exception. Entrepreneur David Nguyen recently shared a video on Instagram that highlights the quirks of charging the Cybertruck. After realizing his battery was down to just 3%, Nguyen set out to charge it up to full power.

You’d expect some cutting-edge tech, like facial recognition or motion sensors, to open the charging port—after all, it’s a Tesla. But instead, Nguyen had to give the side of the truck a few taps with the charger before the port magically opened. After plugging in, he climbed back into the vehicle to reveal just how long it would take to reach a full charge. And trust us, the anticipation is real!

And the result? A staggering one hour and 30 minutes remaining to reach a full charge, which translates to 296 miles of range—aka 100%.

Nguyen explained that reaching this full charge requires 121kW of energy, but here’s the real question: how much is this going to cost?

Well, in San Leandro, California, the electricity rate is $0.61 per kWh, and Nguyen did the math for us, sparing us from doing the work ourselves.

He broke it down: 121 x 0.61 = $73 to fully charge the Cybertruck, giving him a range of 296 miles. “Is that good? Or not good?” he asked, before concluding, “I think it’s pretty good because you’re driving the future—aka the Cybertruck.”

Not everyone shared his enthusiasm, though.

One Instagram user wrote, “$70??? I thought electric was supposed to be cheaper. Why are we doing this again?” Another chimed in: “80 bucks to fill up my GMC 1500 Sierra Diesel. Almost 600 miles on a full tank lmao. So NOT GOOD. Oh, and it only took me four and a half minutes to fill up.”

A third user commented: “So it’s the same cost to fill up a gas SUV, get further distance, and it only takes 10 minutes compared to 1.5 hours??? Think I’ll stick with combustion.”

And another summed it up with: “Absolute joke.”
