Mark Carney, Canada’s next Prime Minister, has slammed Donald Trump in his acceptance speech
Mark Carney, the next Prime Minister of Canada, has vowed to win the ongoing trade war with the US and immediately hit out at Donald Trump after being named as Justin Trudeau’s successor on Sunday (March 9).
The former head of both the UK and Canada’s central banks, Mark Carney, has triumphed in the race to lead Canada’s Liberal Party, marking a historic achievement as the first prime ministerial candidate with little political experience. Carney is poised to take office in the coming days, gearing up to lead the Liberal Party into the next general election, expected to be called soon, according to BBC News. Upon accepting the role, Carney didn’t hold back, immediately taking aim at President Trump with sharp criticism.

In a bold move, the US President has signed an order imposing “catastrophic” tariffs on Canada, citing the country’s failure to live up to its promise to curb the influx of harmful drugs into the United States. Under the new directive, all goods imported from Canada will be hit with a 25 percent tariff, while Canadian energy products face an additional 10 percent levy. The 47th POTUS stated that the only way for Canada to avoid these sanctions would be to become the 51st state of the US.
In a passionate address on Sunday, Mark Carney responded with defiance: “America is not Canada. And Canada will never, ever be part of America in any way, shape, or form.”
“We didn’t ask for this fight, but Canadians are always ready when someone else throws down the gauntlet. The Americans want our resources, our water, our land, our very nation,” Carney continued.
“Think about it. If they succeed, they will destroy our way of life.”
The incoming prime minister acknowledged the difficult times ahead, saying, “I know these are dark days. Dark days brought on by a country we can no longer trust.”
“We’re moving past the shock, but let us never forget the lessons: we must look after ourselves and look out for each other. Together, we will face these challenges head-on.”

In a heartfelt address on Sunday, outgoing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau bid farewell to his leadership, passing the torch to Mark Carney. Reflecting on his time in office, Trudeau spoke of the difficult journey Canada had endured, saying, as reported by the New York Post:
“These past ten years have been nothing short of challenging. Crisis after crisis has been thrown at Canadians, but through every hardship, Canadians have shown their true character. We’ve come together, stood up for one another, and each time, we’ve emerged even stronger.”
He continued, acknowledging the gravity of the moment: “And now, as Canadians face an existential threat from our neighbor — an economic crisis — we are once again demonstrating the strength of our unity and resolve.”
