Anora wins big at Oscars with five awards in major categories

Anora dominated the 97th Academy Awards winning five out of six of its nominated awards

Anora absolutely swept the 2025 Oscars and took home the top prize for Best Picture, with its director Sean Baker becoming the first person to win four Oscars in the same year.

Hollywood’s biggest night dazzled once again as the 97th Academy Awards took center stage at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on March 2.

Dominating the evening was Anora—the gripping drama about a Brooklyn stripper—which was nominated for six awards and walked away with an impressive five wins. The film clinched Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Film Editing, Best Actress, and the coveted Best Picture. The only loss came in the Best Supporting Actor category, where Yuriy Borisov was edged out by Kieran Culkin for his performance in A Real Pain.

Director Sean Baker made history, securing Oscars for editing, writing, directing, and Best Picture—a rare feat in Academy Awards history. During his heartfelt acceptance speech, he expressed gratitude to the Academy, his dedicated team, and the film’s “incredible, incredible cast,” including lead actress Mikey Madison.

Baker also took a moment to acknowledge the real-life inspirations behind Anora, saying:
“I want to thank the sex worker community—they have shared their stories, their life experiences with me over the years. My deepest respect, thank you. I share this with you.”

Mikey Madison, who took home her first-ever Academy Award for Best Actress, was visibly moved during her acceptance speech. She vowed to continue supporting and advocating for the sex worker community while expressing how “honored” she felt to be recognized among such talented nominees.

It was a night of triumph for Anora, cementing its place in Oscar history and leaving audiences buzzing about its impact on cinema.

Anora’s Unstoppable Rise & The Full List of 2025 Oscar Winners

Director Sean Baker never anticipated the overwhelming love and support for Anora when it first hit screens. Speaking to UNILAD, he admitted:

“I thought just the subject matter alone would cause the film to be a little more divisive… so that’s encouraging.”

With Anora being Baker’s fifth film exploring the world of sex work, he emphasized his approach:

“Each time, it’s another individual story showing a different aspect of sex work—but always in a way that allows audiences to connect with the main character, to have empathy, and hopefully help remove the unfair stigma surrounding the adult industry.”

Baker also highlighted how the film’s themes are left open for interpretation, encouraging audiences to apply their own perspectives.

“That’s part of why I wanted to make this film—to spark discussion.”

And spark discussion it did. At the 97th Academy Awards, Anora swept the night, winning five Oscars including Best Picture, Best Director (Baker), Best Original Screenplay, Best Film Editing, and Best Actress (Mikey Madison).
