Boy, 14, Sent Text to Mom Before Dying in a Mass Shooting at Apalachee High School

Reports have surfaced about a heartbreaking moment in the wake of the tragic mass shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, where a 14-year-old boy, Mason Schermerhorn, sent his final text message to his mother just before his life was taken. His sister, Alanna Wallace, has also bravely shared her grief, shedding light on the immense loss their family is enduring.

Amidst the chaos, Mason reached out to his mom from a restroom, seeking comfort. Ronald Clark, a youth minister and chaplain, was on-site helping with the aftermath and described his efforts to assist Mason’s mother in locating her son. Clark, who had just learned of the tragedy while shopping, rushed to the school and offered his support to law enforcement. The scene was overwhelming, with many wounded students, each with their own harrowing stories of survival. As Clark worked tirelessly to find Mason, he spoke with his mother, who believed her son was safe and had texted her from the restroom.

But as Clark brought a photo of Mason to the command post, the devastating truth came to light—Mason was one of the four victims confirmed dead. Clark recalled the agony of having to break the news to Mason’s mother, especially after their conversation the previous day, when she had shared the strength of her bond with her children. Clark spoke of Mason’s infectious spirit, describing him as a joyful, friendly boy who loved life and never allowed his autism to define him. He was well-loved by everyone who knew him, and his bright, warm presence left a lasting impression on all.

In addition to Mason’s tragic story, other heart-wrenching texts from another 14-year-old student revealed the terror of the situation. “School shooting rn. I’m scared, pls, I’m not joking,” the boy texted his mother. Moments later, he shared, “Class. Someone’s dead.”

In the aftermath, Mason’s sister, Alanna, courageously opened up about her loss. She painted a picture of Mason as a loving, energetic soul, always protective of her despite being younger. Alanna shared that Mason’s kindness knew no bounds, touching everyone he encountered, and how his spirit of positivity continues to guide her through her grief. With the support of friends, she’s learning to cope with the pain by embracing the love and light that Mason brought into her life.
