Tragedy in the Caribbean: Plane Crash Claims at Least 12 Lives, Including U.S. Citizens
A devastating plane crash off the coast of Roatán Island has left at least 12 people dead, including American nationals, in a tragedy that has shaken the region. The small aircraft plunged into the Caribbean Sea moments after takeoff, veering sharply off the runway before slamming into the water.
“It made a sharp turn to the right and then just dropped,” said Carlos Padilla, a civil aviation official, as investigators began piecing together the final seconds of the ill-fated flight. A nearby fisherman, narrowly escaping the crash, described the terrifying moment the plane fell from the sky just meters away from his boat.
Rescue efforts have been hampered by the location’s treacherous terrain. “The site is surrounded by nearly 100 feet of jagged rocks,” explained Roatán Fire Captain Franklin Borjas. “Divers are operating in zero visibility, making recovery extremely difficult.”
Among the victims was renowned Honduran musician and politician Aurelio Martínez—a beloved cultural icon and powerful voice in the Garífuna community, an Afro-Indigenous group with deep Caribbean roots. Belize’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs remembered Martínez as “a great friend of Belize and a true champion of Garífuna culture and music. His passing leaves a void in the world of music and culture, but his legacy will live on.”
The Honduran government has activated its Emergency Operations Committee, coordinating multiple agencies in response to the crash. The transport ministry confirmed 14 people were on board, including crew members.
The U.S. State Department has confirmed the death of at least one American citizen and extended heartfelt condolences to the affected families.
Preliminary reports point to mechanical failure as the likely cause of the crash.
