A tragic accident unfolded in the Caribbean Sea when a small plane crashed, claiming the lives of at least twelve people, including US citizens. Civil aviation official Carlos Padilla revealed that the aircraft made a sharp right turn shortly after takeoff, plunging into the water just off the coast of Roatan Island. A local fisherman, who witnessed the crash, narrowly escaped being hit by the falling plane. “It’s been challenging to access the accident site due to 30 meters (98 feet) of rugged rocks, making it impossible to reach by foot or swim,” explained Roatan Fire Captain Franklin Borjas. “The divers involved in the rescue mission are facing zero visibility.”
In response to the disaster, Honduran President Xiomara Castro swiftly activated the Emergency Operations Committee, bringing together various agencies to manage the crisis. According to the country’s transport ministry, 14 passengers were aboard, including crew members. Among the victims was renowned Honduran musician and politician Aurelio Martínez, a beloved figure in the Garífuna music scene. The Garífuna community, with roots in St. Vincent, has lost a powerful voice. Belize’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs honored Martínez, describing him as “a great friend of Belize and a true champion of Garífuna culture and music.” His passing leaves a profound void in the world of music and culture, but his legacy will endure in the hearts of those who admired his art and passion.
The crash is believed to have been caused by a mechanical failure. The US State Department has confirmed the death of an American citizen and has extended condolences to the family. This article is reposted from March 17, 2025. Please SHARE this with your friends and family to raise awareness.
