Major US airport on red alert as passenger is diagnosed with world’s most infectious disease

Measles Alert Issued After Potential Exposure at Chicago O’Hare Airport

Health officials are issuing an urgent warning after a potential measles exposure at Chicago O’Hare International Airport—one of the world’s busiest travel hubs.

An infected adult passenger, later confirmed to have measles, spent extended time in Terminal 1 on April 22 and April 23 between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m., potentially exposing hundreds of travelers to the highly contagious virus.

Although the individual had received one dose of the MMR vaccine, they developed a telltale rash by April 25 and subsequently tested positive for measles. They have been isolating at home since diagnosis.

Days later, a second measles case emerged in another adult residing in the same Illinois county. That person, whose vaccination status remains unknown, sought hospital treatment on April 28 and was promptly isolated by medical staff.

Authorities are urging anyone who was at O’Hare’s Terminal 1 during the exposure window to remain vigilant. If you suspect exposure or experience symptoms—such as fever, cough, or rash—contact your healthcare provider immediately.

This incident adds to a growing series of measles scares linked to major U.S. airports, reigniting concerns over gaps in immunization and the rapid spread of vaccine-preventable diseases in high-traffic areas.
