Chile braces for ……Antarctic tsunami with coastal evacuation underway after huge 7.5-magnitude earthquake

Fears of Devastating Tsunami After Powerful 7.5 Earthquake Near Chilean Coast

Authorities are on high alert after a powerful 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Argentina, sparking fears that a massive tsunami could soon hit southern Chile.

The earthquake, which occurred around 9 a.m. local time, struck approximately 200 kilometers (124 miles) south of Puerto Williams—near the southern tip of Chile—and at a shallow depth of just 10 kilometers, according to the United States Geological Survey. Within moments, four smaller aftershocks were also recorded, deepening concerns across the region.

The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issued a stark warning: tsunami waves as high as 9 feet could slam into Chilean coastlines, while Antarctica could see waves up to 3 feet. Chile’s own Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service (SHOA) confirmed that waves were expected to reach both the Antarctic bases and cities throughout Chile’s far south within hours.

In response, Chilean disaster authorities ordered the immediate evacuation of coastal areas in the Magallanes Region. Sobering video footage from the area shows residents calmly but urgently leaving the danger zone. In the southern city of Punta Arenas, crowds were seen fleeing on foot and in cars, as traffic surged with families attempting to escape potential disaster.

According to Chile’s National Disaster Prevention and Response System (SENAPRED), tsunami waves could affect regions within a 300-kilometer (186-mile) radius from the epicenter—seemingly sparing the Falkland Islands from impact, at least for now.

SENAPRED emphasized that it is continuing to assess the human impact, as well as any damage to infrastructure and essential services. In a reminder that struck a chord with many, the agency added: “Don’t forget to consider your pet and its needs.”

With the threat looming and evacuation efforts underway, communities across southern Chile brace for what could be a life-altering event—hoping that early warnings and swift action will be enough to keep tragedy at bay.
