DA Willis Ordered To Pay Big Fine For Violations In Trump Case

Fani Willis Hit with $54K Penalty Over Open Records Violation Amid Mounting Legal Setbacks

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis has been ordered to pay more than $54,000 in legal fees after a judge ruled her office violated Georgia’s Open Records Act. The penalty stems from Willis’ failure to turn over documents requested by defense attorney Ashleigh Merchant, who represents Michael Roman — a former Trump aide indicted in Georgia’s high-profile election interference case.

The court found that Willis’ team demonstrated “clear antagonism” toward Merchant’s lawful requests, a move the judge deemed unacceptable. This latest legal blow follows her recent disqualification from the Trump case due to what the court described as an “appearance of impropriety.”

Adding to the political fallout, the Georgia Senate recently passed legislation allowing Trump and his co-defendants to seek reimbursement for legal fees if a district attorney is removed from a case due to misconduct.
