Canada's new prime minister issues scathing message to Donald Trump moments after being elected

The Liberal Party leader Mark Carney warned President Trump over some of the American’s ambitions

Newly-elected Canadian PM Mark Carney took just a matter of minutes to speak of President Donald Trump as he addressed the nation.

The 60-year-old has officially taken the reins, stepping into the role left vacant by former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who announced his resignation last month after a decade in power.

In an impassioned speech to his supporters in Ottawa early this morning (April 29), the new Liberal Party leader emphasized the importance of humility in leadership, stating: “Humility is about understanding that one of the key responsibilities of government is preparing for the worst, not just hoping for the best. For months now, I’ve been warning—America is eyeing our land, our resources, our water, our country. And I say, ‘never.’”

He continued, “These are not empty threats. President Trump is attempting to weaken us, hoping to claim us as his own. But that will never happen. We must also recognize, however, that our world has fundamentally shifted.”

This speech follows President Trump’s recent provocative comments about Canada’s future. The 78-year-old Republican has mocked the idea of Canada as the 51st state, even going so far as to dub Justin Trudeau the ‘Governor of Canada’ before his exit from office. Trump has claimed that Canada only functions because the U.S. spends $200 billion annually to subsidize it, but conceded that it could become America’s “greatest state” if it joined the union.

“We’ve moved beyond the shock of America’s betrayal, but let’s not forget the lessons it taught us,” Carney concluded. “We must remain vigilant, look out for ourselves, and, above all, take care of one another.”

“When I sit down with President Trump, it will be to discuss the future of our economic and security relationship as two sovereign nations. And we will do so with the full understanding that Canada has countless alternatives beyond the United States to foster prosperity for all Canadians,” the leader declared confidently.

He took a moment to remind Canadians of what they have achieved when standing united, saying: “In the face of this challenge, united we are choosing to buy Canadian.”

“We are tapping into everything this great nation has to offer, supporting our friends and neighbors who find themselves in the crosshairs of President Trump. We face a crisis we did not create, but we are confronting it head-on.”

He concluded with a message of resilience: “United, we will emerge victorious in this trade war and build the strongest economy in the G7—an economy that works for everyone.”

The G7, or Group of Seven, is a coalition of seven of the world’s most advanced economies: Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK, and the US.
