The Supreme Court has declined to take up a case brought by civil and voting rights groups aiming to strike down Pennsylvania’s rule requiring mail-in ballots to have a handwritten date on the outer envelope.
Advocates argued that the rule is unnecessary and has unfairly disqualified legitimate votes. However, the justices refused to review a lower court decision that upheld the requirement, effectively siding with the stance that it does not violate federal law — which bars rejecting ballots over paperwork mistakes deemed “not material” to a voter’s eligibility.
