Tragedy at Florida State University: Two Dead, Six Injured in Campus Shooting
On April 17, 2025, tragedy struck Florida State University when a gunman opened fire on campus, leaving two people dead and injuring at least six others, according to early reports.
The alleged shooter has been identified as 20-year-old Phoenix Ikner, reportedly the son of a police officer. Authorities believe he used his mother’s former service weapon during the attack.
In the aftermath, President Donald Trump addressed the nation from the White House. Calling the incident “terrible,” Trump expressed his condolences but quickly pivoted to affirm his ongoing support for the Second Amendment.
“I’m a big advocate of the Second Amendment,” the President stated. “I’ve protected it from the beginning.”
In a controversial remark, Trump added, “The gun doesn’t do the shooting, the people do.” He also admitted he had only just heard about the shooting, despite knowing the school and area well. “We’ll have more to say about it later, we’ll see what happens,” he said, referring vaguely to possible legislative responses.
When asked to clarify, Trump responded, “Only in terms of what happens as far as legislation’s concerned—this has been going on a long time.” He reaffirmed, “I have an obligation to protect the Second Amendment. I ran on the Second Amendment—and many other things—and I will always protect it.”
Trump’s remarks were met with immediate backlash online. One commenter criticized the tone of the response, writing, “Sorry about the dead people, but I love guns. Their ashes are not even cold yet. Completely disgraceful and unchristian.”
Another user posted: “Trump’s response to the FSU shooting is callous. Deflecting with ‘guns don’t shoot, people do’ ignores the tragedy and the need for real solutions. His Second Amendment obsession drowns out victims’ voices.”
More reactions echoed similar frustrations: “This rarely happens in countries that don’t have guns. All of them have people.” And another bluntly added, “The gun literally does the shooting. He is a moron.”
Tallahassee Police Chief Lawrence Revell confirmed that the suspect was shot by authorities and is currently being treated in a hospital for serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.
As of now, the motive remains unclear, and the names of those killed or injured have not been released.
