Nurse Gives Woman the Wrong Baby, Then New Mother Turns Pale — Story of the Day

Lucy and Ross had been eagerly anticipating the arrival of their twins, after years of trying to conceive. The ultrasound had confirmed it: a boy and a girl. The couple was filled with joy as they prepared to welcome their little ones into the world. But when the nurse came to deliver the babies after their examination, Lucy was horrified. Instead of her expected son and daughter, she was handed two baby girls.

Pale and frantic, Lucy’s voice trembled as she confronted the nurse. “Where’s my son? What happened to him? And who is this other baby girl?” she demanded, her eyes wide with disbelief.

The nurse, Savannah, appeared unfazed as she checked the documents. “These are your daughters, ma’am. I’ve double-checked the reports, and I’m confident there’s no mistake,” she said calmly.

Lucy’s frustration grew. “No, this isn’t right! I have all the reports! They said I was having a boy and a girl! You must have made a mistake! This can’t be happening!”

Savannah looked at her nervously, but before she could respond, Dr. Linda Carter walked into the room. “Ma’am, please, lower your voice. There are other patients here,” she said, attempting to calm the situation.

“Lower my voice?!” Lucy snapped. “You bring me the wrong child and then try to tell me it’s a mistake? How does this hospital operate? Should I call the chief doctor?”

Ross stepped in, trying to keep things civil. “We don’t want to make a scene, but this is unacceptable. If we don’t get our son back, we’re calling the police!”

Dr. Carter, sensing the tension, asked for the documents. “Savannah, can I see those papers, please?” But the nurse hesitated, stammering, “There’s no need, ma’am… I’ve already checked them…”

Something wasn’t right. Dr. Carter gently reassured her, “It’s alright, let me take a look.” After reading through the documents, Dr. Carter’s expression changed.

“Please give me a moment,” she said, flipping through the pages. “It seems there’s been a mix-up. Another patient named Lucy Matthews was also admitted today. I believe Savannah confused the reports.”

Lucy, still in shock, glared at the nurse. “I’m glad you figured out the mistake, but you better be more careful next time. This is a hospital, not a daycare!”

Dr. Carter turned to Savannah, her tone firm. “I need you to come with me. We’ll sort this out.”

As Savannah followed Dr. Carter down the hall, Lucy couldn’t shake the feeling that something more was going on. Her instincts told her that this mix-up was more than just a simple mistake, so she quietly followed them.

Outside Dr. Carter’s office, Lucy overheard the conversation through a slightly ajar door.

“What were you thinking, Savannah?” Dr. Carter’s voice was stern. “Lucy Matthews had twins today—a boy and a girl, just like the reports said. Why are you telling them otherwise?”

“I didn’t have a choice,” Savannah sobbed. “That other girl… she’s my sister’s baby. My sister died after giving birth, and her husband left her. I couldn’t bear to see her in a nursing home. I thought… maybe the Matthews would be the perfect family for her.”

Lucy’s heart sank as she listened to the story. There was no malice behind the swap, just a desperate act of love. Savannah was simply trying to ensure her niece would grow up in a loving home, despite the tragic circumstances.

Dr. Carter, her voice softening, responded, “I understand, Savannah, but we can’t do this. You need to bring Lucy Matthews’ son back immediately. This must remain between us, but we’ll fix this.”

Lucy, her emotions in turmoil, returned to her room, deeply moved by the nurse’s story. She couldn’t shake the image of that innocent little girl who had been swapped with her son, and the more she thought about it, the more she felt compelled to act.

The next day, as Lucy sat down with Ross, she told him about her dream. “I can’t stop thinking about that little girl. I know it sounds crazy, but I think she’s meant to be with us. I want to adopt her.”

Ross was taken aback. “Lucy, we already have two kids, and now you want to add a third? This is a big decision, don’t make it in haste.”

But Lucy was resolute. “Ross, I can’t stop thinking about her. Please, can we at least go to the hospital and see her?”

Though Ross was hesitant, he eventually agreed. When he held the baby girl in his arms for the first time, her innocent brown eyes with a hint of green melted his heart.

Dr. Carter, seeing their determination, smiled. “I’m glad you’ve decided to adopt her. She’s lucky to have parents like you.”

And so, the process began. It took some time, but Lucy and Ross never wavered in their decision. When they finally brought the little girl home, they felt as though their family was complete. They named her Amelia.

Savannah visited them often, expressing her gratitude for the couple’s decision to adopt her niece. Over time, she became a regular presence at their home, spending weekends with the Matthews children: twins Sia and Mark, and now, Amelia.
