She was overwhelmed with extreme anxiety and fear.”
Walter couldn’t pinpoint what exactly had triggered Tammy’s distress. “I suggested to Tammy’s mother that they take her to see a doctor, and possibly even the police, to investigate whether her fears were psychological or if there was any truth to her suspicion that someone might be trying to kill her.”
After leaving the movie, Tammy returned home, but her mental state continued to worsen. At her mother’s insistence, she spoke to the local sheriff, though she never mentioned her fears that her life was in danger. Instead, Tammy became even more paranoid, particularly around her family members. Her behavior became increasingly erratic. “There were both good and bad days,” Wing, a close friend, recalls. “On some days, she seemed almost normal, but on others, she was extremely on edge. She started to believe that someone was trying to poison her.”
As time passed, her paranoia grew, until one fateful day, on July 1st, everything erupted. Tammy completely snapped. She attacked Wing and began smashing all the windows in the house. It was then that her mother, Linda Curtis, realized just how serious her daughter’s condition had become. On that day, Tammy wore sandals, a gray purse, a blue shirt with floral appliqués, and a blue denim skirt—her final outfit. She walked away from the car, seemingly alone and undeterred.
But Tammy’s disappearance wasn’t as straightforward as it seemed. Friends and family felt she was trying to escape her troubled home life, possibly making the decision to leave behind her old world. Detective Skragg noted, “We spoke with a few of her closest friends. They had a strong sense that she wanted to get away, especially given the difficulties she was facing at home.”
The mystery deepened with the arrival of two strange phone calls. Both were made to Detective Harold Lewis in Cocoa Beach after Tammy’s vanishing. The first call was from a woman claiming Tammy was alive and would contact her loved ones when the time was right. The second call took a different twist—according to the woman on the other end, Tammy was alive and pursuing a new life, training to become a nurse. These cryptic messages only added to the confusion surrounding her disappearance.
Further adding to the speculation was the possibility that Tammy had been barefoot when she vanished. Though this detail was never confirmed, rumors swirled that she may have been three months pregnant at the time, raising even more questions about her sudden decision to leave.
