Donald Trump’s comments about egg prices caused quite an uproar
Donald Trump’s recent comments about egg prices in the US has left some people championing him and others utterly furious in a rather divisive moment.
Trump’s Bold Claim on Egg Prices Sparks Debate
When picturing a president’s first few weeks in office, few would expect eggs to dominate national conversation—yet, here we are.
While eggs are just one of many grocery staples affected by the ongoing trade war with Canada, Mexico, and China, they have become a symbol of the broader cost-of-living crisis. For many Americans, cheaper eggs mean relief, while rising prices signal economic hardship.
During his campaign, Donald Trump repeatedly vowed to bring down grocery costs, often blaming his predecessor, Joe Biden, for rising food prices. Now, in a March 12 press conference alongside Irish Taoiseach Micheál Martin, Trump seized the moment to boast about his impact, making a claim that sent social media into a frenzy.
“I don’t know if you saw,” Trump said. “Little things such as the cost of eggs—little to you, but big to the people out there—down almost 30 percent in the last, eh, few days.”
However, not everyone was convinced. Instead of applause, his remark was met with widespread skepticism, with many insisting he was simply making it up.
As the debate rages on, one thing is certain—eggs are no longer just a breakfast staple; they’re now a political statement.

Trump’s Egg Price Claim Sparks Outrage—But Was He Right?
Donald Trump’s recent claim that egg prices have dropped nearly 30% in just a few days set off a firestorm on social media, with critics mocking and outright dismissing his statement.
One Twitter user quipped:
“Ah yes, eggs cheaper than ever—if you buy them in an alternate universe where facts don’t matter and reality’s on sale.”
Another vented frustration:
“Why do we even film him talking? He just lies about everything. It’s too ridiculous and I can’t believe he just keeps getting away with it.”
A third pointed out their own grocery store reality:
“These egg prices even more high af. Where are all them Trump folks that was so mad & complaining about it??? Haven’t heard food prices complaints from them anymore.”
Yet, despite the backlash, official data appears to back Trump up.
According to figures released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the cost of eggs has indeed dropped significantly. Data from Trading Economics shows that as of March 11, the price of a dozen eggs stood at $5.51—a notable decrease from the record high of $8.17 just weeks earlier.
While critics may question Trump’s motives, the numbers suggest he wasn’t entirely wrong. But whether egg prices remain stable—or become another political battlefield—remains to be seen.

Why Some Shoppers Aren’t Seeing Cheaper Eggs Yet
While data confirms a significant drop in egg prices, many shoppers are still staring at sky-high prices at their local grocery stores. So, what gives?
The answer lies in the gap between wholesale and retail pricing.
- Wholesale egg prices—the cost retailers pay to stock their shelves—have plummeted to a national average of just over $4 per dozen, a sharp drop from the $8+ peak in late February.
- However, because eggs have a shelf life of up to four weeks, stores are still selling off their higher-priced inventory before adjusting prices for consumers.
Economist Jeremy Horpedahl explained to The New York Times that for many shoppers, March’s price cuts might not show up until the end of the month.
So, while the numbers don’t lie, the relief at the checkout lane is taking its sweet time. Guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
