The White House has issued a statement confirming significant progress in discussions between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin aimed at ending the ongoing conflict. According to the statement, Trump and Putin held a phone call in which the Russian leader outlined a series of conditions that must be met for peace to be achieved. The White House views this as a promising step toward resolving the crisis.

The statement reads: “Today, Presidents Trump and Putin discussed the urgent need for a ceasefire and lasting peace in the Ukraine war. Both leaders emphasized that this conflict must end, and that the focus should shift from war to the well-being of the people of both Russia and Ukraine. The bloodshed and resources expended on this war would be far better spent addressing domestic needs.”

It continued, “This war should never have begun and should have been brought to a close long ago through genuine peace efforts. The leaders agreed that the path to peace would begin with a ceasefire focused on energy and infrastructure, followed by technical talks on implementing a maritime ceasefire in the Black Sea, a full ceasefire, and a permanent peace agreement. These negotiations will commence immediately in the Middle East.”

The statement also highlighted discussions about the role the Middle East could play in preventing future conflicts and aggression. “The leaders talked about the Middle East as a region where cooperation could help avoid future wars. They also addressed the critical need to halt the proliferation of strategic weapons and committed to working together with other nations to ensure broader enforcement. Both leaders concurred that Iran must never be allowed to pose a threat to Israel.”

The statement concluded with optimism for the future of U.S.-Russia relations, noting that improved cooperation would yield substantial economic benefits and geopolitical stability once peace is achieved.

Putin has agreed to a 30-day ceasefire on energy infrastructure, as Ukraine has reported ongoing attacks on their infrastructure by Russia in recent weeks.

In its readout of the conversation, Russia laid out its conditions for peace, including halting the mobilization of Ukrainian forces and rearming of their military, and addressing the underlying causes of the crisis. The Russian side also insisted on the cessation of foreign military aid and intelligence sharing with Ukraine, which they see as a key factor in preventing further escalation.

As negotiations continue, further talks will be necessary to address the full scope of the conflict and move toward a lasting resolution.
