The truth has been revealed after President Donald Trump claimed that Canada was ‘one of the highest tariffing nations’ in the whole world.

Earlier this week, President Trump took to Truth Social to share a bold statement about Canada’s recent actions.

In a lengthy post, he wrote: “In response to Ontario, Canada imposing a 25% tariff on electricity entering the United States, I have instructed my Secretary of Commerce to raise the tariff on all steel and aluminum coming into the U.S. from Canada—an additional 25%, bringing the total to 50%. This will make Canada one of the highest tariffed nations in the world.”

Trump further emphasized, “This will take effect TOMORROW MORNING, March 12th. Additionally, Canada must immediately remove their Anti-American Farmer Tariff, which ranges from 250% to 390% on U.S. dairy products—something that has long been deemed outrageous. I will soon be declaring a National Emergency on Electricity in the affected areas, allowing the U.S. to take swift action to address this abusive threat from Canada.” He also issued a stark warning, saying he would “substantially increase” tariffs on April 2nd and “permanently shut down the automobile manufacturing business in Canada.”

Interestingly, despite Trump’s claims, Canada actually ranks as a relatively low-tariff country compared to many others. According to World Bank figures, Canada had a lower average tariff rate than the U.S. in 2022, and out of 137 published countries, Canada was ranked 102nd in terms of most heavily tariffed nations.

Scott Lincicome, vice president of general economics and trade at the Cato Institute, called Trump’s assertions “nonsense.”
