When they finally brought the flames under control, they made a devastating discovery upstairs. Shelby Carter had died due to carbon monoxide poisoning caused by the smoke. There were concerns that she might have been harmed by the smoke or the fall, but thanks to Shelby’s quick thinking and protective actions, Keana was unharmed and survived without injury. “It’s just incredible that she was able to pull her thoughts together to save her baby,” said Ed Foglesonger, Chief of the Wyoming-Speer Fire Protection District, in an interview with The Washington Post. “I’d say it’s nothing short of a miracle the way it ended up.”
